The Otis Jones Project was officially formed in early January 2008 in East Texas by three musicians with very diverse backgrounds and influences. Josh McGee is a devil-may-care rock ‘n’ roller type with a guitar style that is heavily laced with the tones of late 1960's artists like Jimi Hendrix and Cream-era Eric Clapton. His vocals often vary in dynamics from smooth and laid back with a “come-hither” quality, to heavy, expressive, and energetic. Wil Willoughby, once a mercenary musician, is a drummer who prefers a dirty, mean sounding kit and specializes in playing funky juke-joint style grooves as well as heavy Bonham-esque rock beats. Jim Hogle is a virtuoso bassist who utilizes a jazzy R&B approach to playing that is dedicated solely to the motion of hips. As Mark Beneventi of Dallas’ Lit Monthly puts it, “Jim Hogle runs through trippy bass lines that James Brown would be happy to shake ‘n’ slide to.” Jim provides the glue that seals Josh’s raw, emotional rock guitar to Wil’s funky jams, with his fat tones and thick, buttery bass lines. As a group, their sound ranges from hard and heavy, to smooth and soulful groove (often both dynamics are heard within the same song), all with an indie rock quality and spirit of experimentation.
